Big day for big success
This is a big moment for Portsmouth, and even more for Cardiff City, since on Saturday on 16:00 CET they will meet in FA Cup finals at New Wembley stadium. Shocking cup season in England was completely unexpected and unpredictable. A win over WBA saw Portsmouth advance to the finals, continuing the tradition of Premier League teams playing in the finals since foundation of English league 1888. The Pompey were the only Premier League side in the semi-finals.
The team from southern coast also have the chance to be the first Cup winner outside of so called „big four“ (Manchester United-Arsenal-Liverpool-Chelsea) since Everton won in 1995.
Cardiff City are the first club outside of the highest rank that play in the finals after 2004, when Milwall that created a sensation by qualifying for the finals. The chance given to the Blue birds is unique, since the last non-Premier League Cup winner were West Ham in 1980.
Long time since the last trophy
Both sides won this trophy once, but this was in ancient times (Portsmouth in 1939, and Cardiff 1927). Also, both rivals have already played their semifinal matches at Wembley stadium, where the national cup finals is played for the second time.
Chances to win seem equal for both sides, regardless of their league status, and the reasons for that are obvious: great many surprising results in the cup, weak form of both sides in the finish of their leagues, as well as the tension and anxiety among the players.
