France - Ligue 1: Marseille vs PSG The biggest derby of French football differs from most of the derbies in world football as it is neither a game between most successful clubs in the country nor the clash between the local rivals but it still generates all the excitement, passion and hatred as any other derby game. PSG won at Velodrome last season 4:2 but that don’t look like happening again.
Marseille are back in business
Marseille recovered well from three successive defeats that were threatening to destabilize the team and the wins over Nancy and Zurich in Ligue 1 and Champions League respectively were a big confidence boost for the players. The hosts are obviously very motivated to win this game and they are definitely better team than PSG. Carried by the great support from the stands, OM could emerge victorious in the end. Blue Square is paying 1.80 on home win.
One of the reasons for the latest uptrend in form is the fact that Didier Deschamps finally managed to sort out the back line. Gabriel Heinze has replaced attack-minded Taiwo at left-back, while Hilton and Mbia now form a defensive partnership. This resulted in two successive clean sheets and another one of those would probably mean three points as we cannot expect the hosts to go whole match without scoring. William Hill is paying 2.25 on Marseille to keep a clean sheet.
PSG sitting in 9th place
PSG had a good start of the season despite the problems they had with injured players but these problems later started taking its toll and the Saints enter this derby from the 9th place in Ligue 1. Antoine Kombouare are set to miss a couple of very important players since Hoarau is out with injury, whereas Makelele faces three-match ban for the brutal foul against Lorient. Mevlut Erding, however, is set to return into the fold after recovering from injury but we are yet to see how much he can offer at this stage. When he is fit, the Turkish striker is one of the best players in France and backing Erding to score at 3.40 offered by Bet365 is the right thing to do.
Seeing they lack the striking power, the visitors are likely to adopt defensive approach and search for their chance on the break. Marseille will not be prepared to risk too much, especially in the first half and we probably won’t see too many goals during the first period. Expekt is paying 1.38 on under 1.5 goals in the first half.
Betting verdict
Marseille are the better team here and we expect them to win the match but the odds are simply too low for the risk involved. We see under 2.5 goals as much better choice since neither team will be prepared to risk too much.
