Dundalk climbed to fifth with back to back wins over Bray and Cork City and they are looking to surprise title chasers Derry City. Derry are also in excellent form and the visitors will try to win the game and thus keep up with league leaders Bohemians.
Dundalk are improving
This is the first season of top flight football for the club since 2002 and the first objective is to avoid the drop. Dundalk had had a very poor start to the season after being promoted from the second division but the team have shown massive improvement in recent weeks and they are now occupying the fifth place in the standings. They recorded three successive wins, two of which were league wins and enter this match in great spirits. Even though they are now in the top part of the table, Dundalk are still just five points clear of the relegation zone and they have to continue picking up points. Boss Sean Connor has absolutely no selection worries and he could hand debuts to new signings Mickey Collins and Alex Williams. Dundalk will have a great chance to pick up some points against title contenders since the visitors will arrive to Oriel Park without several first team regulars and we believe they will not miss that chance. They traditionally do well against Derry City and the trend is likely to continue.
Derry City are still in the title race
This has been a remarkable season for Derry City and they are still very much in the title race. Even though they had some problems at the start of the league campaign, the team managed to improve the results and they are now just one point adrift of Bohemians, the same team they trailed by 27 points at the end of last season. Derry have been in excellent form lately, having won the last five games in all competitions but they will definitely not have an easy job in this match. Dundalk have already beaten them this season and even though Stephen Kenny’s players are determined to get revenge, they will have big problems at Oriel Park. Boss Kenny will miss no less than six first team regulars and that will be a big blow for the team. Stephen Gray, Clive Delaney and Gareth McGlynn are out through suspension, whereas Kevin Deery, Barry Molloy and Liam Kearney are all out with injury. This is definitely going to affect the team’s performance and it will give the hosts an extra edge.
Betting verdict
Both teams are in excellent form lately and we expect a close game, but while Dundalk will be at full strength, the visitors will miss practically half of the starting line-up. This is why the hosts are slight favourites here and we believe they will take at least one point.
