Aston Villa vs Newcastle goals and highlights

Aston Villa drew with Middlesbrough last weekend and they now need to beat Newcastle in order to leapfrog Everton in the standings and thus end the season in fifth place. Newcastle are in much more difficult position as maybe not even a win at Villa Park would be enough for them to avoid the drop.

Aston Villa want a fifth-place finish

Aston Villa had high hopes for this season, especially after the first part of the league campaign, when they were considered favourites for the fourth place in the standings and a Champions League berth. However, Martin O’Neill’s team suffered a burn out in the second part of the season and they were easily eliminated from all the competitions entered, while they also lost their advantage over Arsenal and will have to settle for a place in next season’s Europa League. It is more than evident that the players are tired after playing 54 games this season and they are eagerly awaiting the holidays. Villa have been in a very poor form of late and they even allowed Everton to leapfrog them in the standings. Villans now need to beat Newcastle if they want to finish fifth, but that will be in vain if Everton win their game against Fulham. Martin O’Neill has got some selection problems before this match as Luke Young and Ashley Young are struggling with injuries and their condition will be reassessed on match day. The hosts will definitely adopt their trademark attacking approach against Newcastle and we are likely to see a very open match, since Newcastle also must try to pick up all three points from this match.

Magpies still believe

Newcastle missed a great chance to virtually ensure survival last week, having lost the home game to Fulham and they now face an uphill task at Villa Park. The Magpies entered the match on a high after the big win over Middlesbrough but they failed to repeat the good performance from the Boro game and they found themselves a goal down after the first half. They started pressing in search for the equalizer but their job was made much more difficult when defender Bassong was sent off on the hour mark. Alan Shearer’s side lost the match and thus stayed in the relegation zone, one point adrift of Hull and two of Sunderland. The Magpies now need to beat Aston Villa in the season finale but not even three points would guarantee them survival if Hull and Sunderland win their matches. Hull and Sunderland will play Manchester United and Chelsea respectively, which gives Newcastle a good chance of staying up with three points from Birmingham. They will also ensure survival with one point from Villa Park if Hull lose at home to United as the Magpies have got a superior goal difference. Barton and Bassong will miss the game through injury, whereas Martins, Owen and Beye all remain injury doubts.

Betting verdict

Aston Villa need a win as they want to beat Everton to the fifth place, while the visitors are still fighting to avoid the drop and they also need the three points. Both teams will adopt attacking approach, which should guarantee us goals.
