The big derby will be played on Saturday at the Riverside. Middlesbrough ended their good run of results by losing to Bolton last week but they will have another chance to make things right. Newcastle, on the other hand, held on at Stamford Bridge to earn a goal-less draw but they are still in the relegation zone. The Magpies will try to win this match and start the climb up the Premiership table.

Boro’s run came to an abrupt end

After the five-match unbeaten run, Middlesbrough played host to struggling Bolton and the home fans expected the good run to continue. However, Bolton started the game much better than Boro and the Trotters managed to score two early goals and the match was effectively over after just two minutes. Boro pulled one back late into the game but Elmander scored just a minute later to set the final result 3:1. Southgate’s team conceded three goals from the team that scored three goals in the six games previous games, which shows that defensive area certainly needs improving. Alves and Sanli created a lot of problems for Bolton defenders but they simply couldn’t score. The team has enough attacking potential as besides these two, Downing and Aliadiere are also dangerous in front of goal. The hosts are expected to adopt an attacking approach as everybody will expect response after the disappointing defeat from Bolton. Southgate still cannot count on Huth and Shawky, both of whom have started training but are still not ready for action. Chris Riggot also misses out, while Mido could make a comeback in this match.

Newcastle will have the support of 4,000 fans

Newcastle enter the derby match in good mood after taking a valuable point from Stamford Bridge but they are still in the relegation zone. The Magpies expect to record back to back victories against Middlesbrough and Stoke and finally escape from the dangerous zone. The team produced a spirited performance against Chelsea as they managed to restrict the more illustrious opponent to just a couple of chances, mostly thanks to great defending and some outstanding saves from Shay Given. However, they stayed in the relegation zone as Wigan won their match on Monday and they desperately need to win a couple of games in succession. They will have a good chance to do that as they will play Stoke after the match at the Riverside but first comes Middlesbrough. The Magpies will revert to their attacking approach as they are aware that they have a good chance to win this match and Michael Owen will continue to partner Martins in attack as he is now fully fit. Gutierrez and Duff will provide support from the wings and basically we expect that Joe Kinnear will name an unchanged squad for this match.

Betting verdict

Both teams will be looking to win this derby match and this should be a very interesting game. Both Middlesbrough and Newcastle have a lot of attacking potential but the teams are not so strong defensively, thus we could see a lot of goals on Saturday. We recommend betting on over 2.5.
