This week Turkey - Super Lig matches
|
The biggest derby of Turkish football gets under way on Sunday evening, as Fenrbahce hosts Galatasaray. The Bosphorous seas strait divides the city of Istanbul, with Fenerbahce on the Asian side and Galatasaray on the European side. Both teams have had a lot of problems from the start of the season but all that will be forgotten on Sunday. The winner of the match will kick-start their season while the loser will be in even bigger problems than at the moment.
Fenerbahce desperately need a win
Luis Aragones couldn’t do what he was brought for and the team is in big problems from the start of the season. The performances are really disappointing and if they do not improve quickly, this will be a very disappointing season. Aragones still has the backing of the club’s board but defeat from Galatasaray could change everything. The team is currently in the middle of the table with just 13 points from nine games and they have already conceded 15 goals. Defense seems to be the biggest problem this season, with Edu and Lugano not particularly impressive so far. Carlos and Sabri are paying more attention to attack, while midfielders are not providing enough cover. However, after the nine conceded goals in four games, Fenerbahce managed to improve and kept clean sheet against Arsenal at the Emirates. The result will have encouraged the players before the big derby and now they will try to take all three points and close the gap behind the big rival on just one point. Aragones will not be able to count on his best player, Alex, who is injured and that will be a tremendous loss. Alex is the most creative player in the team and he will be impossible to replace. However, striker Deivid will probably take some part in the match after recovering from a difficult injury.
Galatasaray has improved
Just like their biggest rival, Glatasaray had a lot of problems at the start of the season, mostly with injured players. The results were very disappointing and coach Skibbe was nearing the sack. However, the situation with injured players has improved and so has the results, meaning that the players will enter the match full of confidence. With a couple of very good performances, the team managed to close the gap behind leaders Trabzon on just three points and if they manage to win against Fenerbahce, they will be in a very good position. After the convincing victory over Gaziantep last weekend, Skibbe’s team traveled to Portugal to play Benfica in the UEFA Cup. With three points from the opening match with Olympiakos already on board, everybody thought that Skibbe will rest most of the first team regulars for the match with Fenerbahce. However, the German coach fielded his strongest line-up, with the exception of Harry Kewel and won the game 2:0, thus qualifying for the knockout stages. Harry Kewel is expected to reclaim the starting berth, while Linderoth, Topal, Yilmaz, Emre Gungor and Hasan Sas remain injured.
Betting verdict
This will be another intense affair at Sucru Saracoglu stadium and these derbies are very difficult to predict. Still, Fener will be without the soul of the team, Alex, while Skibbe will be able to count on almost the strongest line-up. Galatasaray is in great form, while the hosts will be under a lot of pressure. That is why we will opt for the away win, of course with a small stake.
