This week Champions League - Group A matches
|
It’s been a long time since Roma have been in such a situation. Saturday loss in Torino showed how big is the crisis they are in and although Luciano Spalletti survived on the bench it is not clear how Romans will handle this situation. They are on the wrong side of the standings in Serie A, lost all of the away matches in domestic championship, going on a five-game losing run including the Champions League and few people believe they stand some chance of saving the season. The combination of injuries and poor form of the players caused a terrible start and Roma are on their knees at the moment. Unfortunately the rivals at Olimpico will be Chelsea that after losing to Liverpool ten days ago, fought back by winning Hull and Sunderland which saw the Blues back on top. Still, judging by what we saw Scolari’s side still look like they have the quality for title contention. They want to finish the job in the group quickly and get to the knock-out stage as soon as possible so they can focus on the domestic championship.
Roma have three points from three games
They still stand some chance to get to the knock-out stage for the fourth year in a row. They won Bordeaux away, and will play two home matches in the second round of the competition, while they will travel to Cluj. Still, it is a big question if they will be able to beat anyone with the play they showed this season. Roma are in a mess, the situation when it comes to isolation after the losing run shows that Spalletti is not on good terms with the management. The pressure of the fans is huge, team faced a barrage of criticism right after returning from Torino and the already on Sunday morning some unpleasant scenes occurred in the training centre. The atmosphere is heated up by the media that claim that Spalletti’s children were attacked in school because of the poor results and that they are tortured by their peers and the coach denied that right away. All eyes are on Totti, he will get his act together and play against Chelsea but the question is how efficient he will be.
Chelsea await the game relaxed
With seven points from three games they can employ tactics, Chelsea will host Cluj and travel to France, according to all the predictions few other points will be enough. Busy schedule didn’t reflect the morale and physical condition of the team, even the loss to Liverpool didn’t disturb them. Scolari has two teams at his disposal, he changed the approach and after the triumph over tough Sunderland, many people rushed to the conclusion that Chelsea play the most attractive football in the Premiership at the moment. They struggled against Roma in the first match but this is an experienced team and we think that they will have easier job here as the home side must attack. The English side are not the kind of team that leave too much space to their rivals and regardless of some injuries, like Carvalho's for example, we think that Scolari won’t have trouble with home side strikers.
Betting Verdict
Roma should really make a dramatic improvement in their play if they wish to win Chelsea. They will be thinking about the second group A match and they will perhaps settle for a point against the best team in the group. Spalletti won’t make many changes as he has no alternatives; Roma is best at 4-3-2-1 formation and with Totti as the forward they will be more dangerous than against Juventus when they seemed helpless. This smells like a draw, because Chelsea won’t insist on winning too much. Shared points would suit both sides.
