The games between Athletic and Real have been considered a derby until some ten years ago, as these two teams are the most successful in Spain. A lot of years has passed since Athletic last won the title in Spain but still, the match at Santiago Bernabeu will be important for both sides. Real enters this game on the back of the defeat in Turin, while Athletic lost the last three games.

Schuster wants his players to take the game seriously

The defeat from Juventus might have done good things to Schuster’s team. Last three performances were not so good. Espanyol, Atletico and Juventus had no problems reaching Real’s goal. Espanyol could have easily won the game in Madrid two weeks ago. Atletico dominated the second period against Real, while Juventus scored two against laughable Real defense. The average of almost two conceded goals should worry Bernd Schuster. As much as Real is convincing in attack that much they are unconvincing in defense. Maybe the absence of Heinze in the last few games had something to do with this. Even though both Pepe and Cannavaro are solid lately it seems that the back line doesn’t work the right way. Based on what we have seen from Athletic they shouldn’t pose too much trouble for Real defense. Only four goals scored show that the Basques doesn’t have a true goal scorer. Fran Llorente is poor lately and Athletico doesn’t have a worthy replacement. We expect an easy Real win.

Caparros is still experimenting with the team

The start of this season is almost the same as last one. Same problems, same bad run of results, poor finishing. Joaquin Caparros doesn’t understand how the team that played so well in the second part of last season can have such bad results now. It is evident that last season’s best scorer Fran Llorente is in poor form but the club like Athletic must have other alternatives. Three straight defeats and the visit to Madrid, where they are unlikely to avoid defeat, can put Athletic in the bottom place in the standings. Only four goals scored in the seven games is really disappointing. There are some problems in defense too, but this line is not bad at all. The fans put all their hopes in defense, as if they give their best the team might take a point. They cannot even dream about winning.

Betting verdict

Real is big favourite here and they will not allow any surprises. Athletic travels to Madrid looking to take a point but that will be very hard to do, considering Real’s great strikers. Twenty goals scored so far, or almost three on average give the clear picture of the ‘hell’ the Basques will face in Madrid.
