This week England - Premier League matches
|
Aston Villa and Liverpool will play this game after playing in European competitions in midweek. Both teams progressed to the next stage, and while Villa had an easy job against FH, Liverpool was given hard time by the resilient Standard, and they only managed to win thanks to Kuyt’s goal in extra time. Liverpool started the Premier League with back to back victories, which is the first time during Benitez’s reign. After the convincing opening win, Aston Villa lost to new comers Stoke and spoiled good impression from the start.
Aston Villa disappointed against Stoke
After severely strengthening the squad Martin O’Neill expected his team to reach new heights this season. And the start was to match as the team scored four goals against Manchester City, and looked really good. In the meantime they easily defeated FH from Iceland in the UEFA Cup qualifying round. Their next league game was against newly promoted Stoke, and everybody expected them to continue the good run of results, but home players had other thoughts on their mind. Stoke allowed no space for the visiting players, and they were constantly hunting them down all over the pitch. That kind of approach paid off as they won the game. Villa played on Thursday the return leg with FH, and manager was able to rest key players for this game. Shorey and Bouma are out, while Sidwell and Cuellar could be ready to take some part.
Liverpool had a proper start
Liverpool was again struggling at the start of the Premier League, but managed to take maximum number of points thanks to no less than three late goals. And when we add the win over Standard with a goal from the end of extra time, we have a certain pattern. Though we cannot deny the fact that they were a bit lucky, we also have to notice that it takes a lot of character to win all these games in the dying moments. This is the quality of the big teams, and it seems that Liverpool is slowly becoming one. Despite trailing to Middlesbrough at home, they managed to get back into the game, and scored two in the last five minutes. The savior was again Gerrard, who has just had a surgery on his groin and will be out for three weeks. This is a big blow for the team and we are yet to see how they will cope. Degen and Hyppia are also injured.
Betting verdict
Aston Villa started he season brilliantly, but they unexpectedly lost to Stoke. Their UEFA Cup campaign is going as planned, though they played a very weak opponent. The replacement for the injured left back Bouma, Nicky Shorey is also injured, and we will see who will field this position. Liverpool started really well, thanks to some late goals, but they will have to cope without Steven Gerrard next three weeks. If they managed to stay near the top during his absence, they will have good chances of challenging for the title. Everything is possible in the clash of such a great teams, but we advise you to bet on draw, as both teams will be satisfied with one point.
