This is, undoubtedly the peak of the qualifications, the central match of the third round where two well-known teams will have the biggest obstacle on their way to the group stage. None of the sides were satisfied after the draw, but they can’t help it… Schalke are in a slightly favoured position since the season in Bundesliga starts in two weeks but this doesn’t have to mean a thing. Last season German side played in the quarterfinals which is their biggest success and as for Atletico this is their chance to get back among European elite; the last time they were in the Champions league was 11 years ago and they reached quarterfinals then. Madrid side have invested a lot in the team over the last few years and all with the aim to return to the most important competition in Europe. Now they are a step away from their aim but Schalke will be tough opponents, especially because Coclhoneros can’t count on Kuno Aguero who is at the Olympics.
Schalke will start the season with the new coach
Fred Rutten is not so famous name outside of Netherlands borders but he marked an excellent result with Twente last season reaching the Champions league qualifications. He took captain, Orlando Engelaar with him to Bundesliga and he is Schalke’s biggest back-up. This defensive midfielder played excellent in EURO so the German club had no doubts about hiring him although he is not so young. Royal blue purchased in Netherlands this summer, so Fanfan arrived from PSV. There weren’t any major changes in the squad; Rakitic and Kuranyi stayed in the club in spite of some fantastic offers so we can say that the team is stronger that last season... Therefore the ambitions are higher, especially ’’’’’’’’’’’’’’
Atletico ended up fourth in domestic championship
It was a seasons or rise and fall but Atletico managed to accomplish their aim. They came in fourth ahead of Sevilla; Mexican Aguirre kept his job and it certainly won’t be easy for him if the club doesn’t qualify for the group stage. During the summer, Atletico brought several excellent players whose experience will mean a lot. Coupet and Ujfalusi, Heitinga and Sinama Pongolle are all players that can lift the quality of the play on a higher level, last season meant affirmation of some younger players like Camacho so their contribution will be priceless. Madrid side will do anything to fight a positive result at Veltins Arena since they are much stronger with Aguero in the team. A small problem is incoherence in defense but, anyway, Aguirre is aware that his side must score if they wish for a good result.
Betting verdict
It is hard to predict the final outcome. Schalke are the favourites because of the home ground but we are not sure whether their offensive style will be crucial in this match. Atletico have a lot of experience, they are very mobile, know how to defend and with Forlan as a forward the materialisation is usually high. We will try to avoid betting on the final outcome; try betting on goals, since it is quite possible that both sides will fins their way to the opposite net.
