Italian Serie A: Siena vs Palermo

Siena played great at Meazza. As excellent coach Beretta promised, they fought til the last whistle and prevented champions' celebration in front of 80 000 people in Milano. They were losing but they managed to get back in the game twice. So the tiny club from Toscana continued schooling the giants this season. Two weeks ago they beat Juventus and this spring at Franchi also fell Roma and neighbours Fiorentina. Palermo were defeated by Sampdoria while saying goodbye to their fans at Barbera. The match was insignificant result-wise, but 25 000 fans said goodbye to Amauri who is leaving the club. The way things are now, rosanero will start the next season with a quite changed squad since president Zamparini announced the possibility to sell Barzagli and Miccoli. Zaccardo already signed for German Wolfsburg.

Still thinking about the coach for the next season

It seems that good results weren’t enough for Siena management to extend Mario Beretta’s contract. President De Luca is delaying his decision and the media speculate about several candidates. Next year Siena will also have only one aim – to avoid relegation and considering that De Ceglie and several other good players are leaving the club, they will need some skill to fill in the wholes in the transfer window. This season can be divided into a weak autumn and excellent spring; the squad won three out of last five matches at home, they rarely lose, so points taken away against direct rivals were crucial for their escape to the midtable. It is obvious that they have more self-confidence; judging by the match against Inter we think that bianconeri seem better than ever in Serie A.

Palermo have a better squad than the standings show

Palermo, themselves were their own biggest enemy. A lot has been invested in the squad, but due to constant tensions between president and the coach they failed to make a success in this championship. Midtable doesn’t satisfy the fans but the club are clearly going downhill. Last season they failed to reach the Champions League although the competition was much weaker but they inexplicably slowed down in the second part of the season. This season they weren’t even close to the Champions League and they are also far away from Intertoto Cup. The complete reconstruction will be made; it seems that coach Colantuono will stay and who will arrive to Sicily during the summer is yet to be seen. Zamparini hoped for a gift from Juventus in exchange for Amauri but Palladino and Giovinco refused to move to the island.

Betting Verdict

It is hard to bet on such games where teams are thinking about vacation and Siena are worn out from the duel against Inter. This is an insignificant match, a calm game where we might see goals but be careful since the attackers won’t have any special motivation. Perhaps it is best to try betting on a draw; if the first half goes by without goals, both sides will probably settle for a draw. In the first part of the season, Siena celebrated at Barbera but Palermo haven’t lost at Franchi to Siena in Serie A so far. We suggest a small stake on a draw.
