 This will be one of the most interesting matches of the week. Derby of the northern coast is the match that never lack with good performance and excitement. There is no doubt that it will be the same this time. Both teams are in solid form and Racing needs points to secure UEFA Cup place. As always, lot of away fans will be at San Mames.
Regional derby is good enough for motivation
Athletic reached their goal, and it was survival. At one moment they had solid chances to take UEFA Cup place, but after home defeat against Mallorca they lost all the chances. Now, Basques can play for their pride only and for their great fans. Racing, as the regional rival, have always been great motivation and won’t let the Bilbao players to relax. We have expected their last win at Murcia, and it was enough for Athletic to recover from Mallorca defeat. During this week we could read in the press that Guardiola, as new Barca coach is interested in Amorrebieta, Athletic midfielder. We could not see any reply from Bilbao yet. They are focused at Sunday game in which they want to beat Racing and repay some debts from previous seasons. Also, they want to play for their fans that helped them a lot during the whole season.
Draw would be a success
Racing is in pretty bad form for last couple of weeks. In last 4 games they lost 3 times, and only win was against Murcia that has already been relegated. It is big question if it is problem with the form or with concentration, but coach Marcelino is asking from his players the commitment and the last attempt to save everything they did during the season. It would be pity for this team that produced some of the finest performances during the year with lot of goals and great football, to slip at the last few steps. The last home defeat, against direct rival Sevilla, made lot of noises in the club. That was the key game, in which Racing could secure their UEFA Cup position and to even keep some chances for Champions League. With the defeat, Racing lost 5th place to Sevilla, Atletico took their chance to make bigger gap and even Mallorca is now pretty close. Everything happened before the important match at Bilbao and the last game against relegation candidate, Osasuna, who will probably come to Santander to play for survival. Still, Racing has enough chances to defend their league position and to even win their 5th place back. After suspension, they will welcome back Jorge Lopez who is one of the key players in the midfield.
