 Udinese - Cagliari
Udinese won the game in Empoli, thus getting ahead of Samp and reaching 6th place with intentions of staying there, even more so since Samp will play away in Palermo and against Juventus at home in final round. Clearly Friulanis will try to win over Cagliari and get further ahead of their rivals because they will also have a difficult task in Milan in final round. However, it makes no difference whether they end up 6th or 7th because after semi-final Cup games it seems even 7th place will lead to Europe. Cagliari almost certainly assured their survival with another home win, taking advantage of Fiorentina`s exhaustion. It was their 7th win in last 9 games at Sant'Elia. They`re still not mathematically safe, but even if they lose at Friuli, they`ll play at home against Reggina in final round and will need one point at worst. Oddly enough, impulsive president Cellino still made no offers for coach Ballardini...quite amazing, knowing what young coach has achieved in second part of the season.
Udinese could have done more
Surely no one will be displeased with 6th place, but it feels the team could have even made it to Champions League. They`re at least as talented as Fiorentina. Further on, they didn`t play in Europe thus preserved their strength. What they didn`t see coming were injuries of almost all defense players: Zapata, Mesto and Felipe, above all. Udinese slid down the board after New Year, gaining just one point against Inter in games against great teams at Friuli. Later on, strikers entered a certain crisis and 6th position came as a logical result. It`ll be a hot summer for them, Zapata, Inler, Di Natale, Quagliarella, Felipe, goalkeeper Handanovic, all of them targeted by great Italian clubs. Patron Pozzo promised to preserve the squad but some of them will be sold. They needn`t worry about their future, project Udinese functions greatly.
Cagliari failing to play as good away
The team from Sardinia seem frightened when playing away, it looks like they need more self-confidence. A typical example was the game against Inter 2 weeks ago. It seems they have lost it even before the game began, even though there were periods when they were the better rival. It was also the case in the game against Samp. They utterly prevailed over one of league`s best home sides, but settled for 1-1 draw after conceding a goal in injury time. It all indicates they`re capable of playing much better away but somehow they never do. Ballardini doesn`t lose any sleep over it, all can be made up for at home...Sardis have let go of just 4 points in last 9 home games...it`s a great accomplishment and Cagliari could have fought for Champions League had the season started in January. The second championship half made them look like an entirely different team.
Betting verdict
We`ll take a chance with 2.00 odds. With everything nice we said about Cagliari, Udinese remain a better team. Conti, Marchini, Parola and Acquafresca won`t be available for visitors and it could be a great disadvantage. Udinese won at Sardinia in first season-part but it was a time of great problems for Cagliari. Traditionally they don`t do well when playing against Udinese, so we suggest a solid bet on home win. If Parma and Catania lose in Florence and Torino, as expected, Cagliari will make it to mathematical safety even with a defeat.
