Watford - Hull 13:00

After many obstacles and problems, Watford assured their 6th position, leading to play-off. Hornets have gone through a drama in final round, conceding an early goal in away game against Blackpool, with Sheffield United getting a lead in Southampton at the same time. It was clear that they needed an equalizer in order to restore chances for regaining 6th place. After striker Darius Henderson had been sent off, it seemed equalizing would never happen, but officially best Watford player for the season – Tommy Smith drew levell, only 3 minutes later. It remained by 1:1, but Hornets were still close from failing to make it to play-off. If Wolves had scored another goal against Plymouth (1:0), they would have ended up 6th, and Watford 7th.

Bloomfield Road was also a place where Watford displayed the form they were in throughout entire spring – a pale performance with no grit or will. Manager Aidy Boothroyd`s squad were best in league in first half of championship, constantly holding onto 1st or 2nd position. They were already considered to be directly promoted, alongside WBA, and then... best striker Marlon King was sold to Wigan in January. Springtime brought a major drop in form, best illustrated by the fact that Hornets won just 1 of last 14 games.

Hull assured their play-off position before final round, even with some chances of direct promotion. However, the very start of their away game in Ipswich made it clear that home side were much more eager to win, so eventually Ipswich Town won 1:0, quite deservingly. Still, Tigers did remain at 3rd place, and it gives them hope to take advantage of Watford`s bad shape.

Manager Phil Brown`s side were constantly good throughout the season. They reached mid-table after only few rounds, and a furious finish brought them a chance to fight for highest placement, with series of 8 wins in last 12 games (and also 3 defeats). Young Fraizer Campbell (on loan striker from Manchester United) and Henrik Pedersen (a veteran from Bolton) fit in perfectly alongside rock-solid defense led by Michael Turner and occasional help from Jay-Jay Okocha in midfield, often having trouble with injuries. Brown composed a solid squad, barely avoiding relegation previous season.

It`s a tough game to bet on. Hull got their form and placement on their side and Watford got experience of such games on theirs. Watford lost last 3 championship games at Vicarage Road (Scunthorpe, Crystal Palace, Barnsley) failing to score a single goal, and a major improvement is highly unlikely for this game, especially if Darius Henderson stays off due to his ban. Visitors will also try not to lose above all, and it all indicates this would be a tough and not very interesting game, with very few opportunities for scoring and even lesser goals. Both rivals will probably postpone the decision for 2nd leg at KC stadium.
