After a disastrous defeat by the Bavarians last weekend, Millionaires suffered another defeat by the middle of the week by Hannover in front of their fans. Although Bayern played without several starters, they managed to neutralise Frankfurt’s minimum lead and take three points from this ground.
No standard keepers in Cup finals
Coach Thomas Doll changed even five players in the starting eleven that were humiliated against the Bavarians. Both standard keepers, Weidenfeller and Ziegler were injured so Doll had to introduce young Marcel Hottecke who will probably guard the net in DFB finals as well. Young keeper didn’t have the chance to be in the starting eleven so far which is why his mistake with Hannover's second goal was no wonder, though we should mention that the other two goals would leave even much more experienced keepers without a solution.
This season Dortmund play much better in the Cup than in Bundesliga, which is why they made it to the finals. Besides injured keepers, the greatest handicap for the millionaires will definitely be the embarrassing 5:0 defeat they suffered away against the other finalists Bayern. Coach Doll will be able to count on Tinga for this match who was suspended when they played against Hannover. He will definitely join the starters since he holds a lot of responsibility for the finals. As for the attacking part of the team, coach again decided to give the chance to tandem Frei-Petric who were totally unconvincing in the last match against Bayern. In the last round Frei was the only scorer for his team, while Petric rested during this game. Ricken, Tyrala, Njambe and Vrzogic are still injured as well as afore mentioned keepers.
Kahn’s sixth finals
In the last round Bayern managed to celebrate against Frankfurt away 3:1, although home side ended the first half with a minimum lead. Besides the Bavarians started the match incomplete since the coach was resting the stars for the Berlin finals. Half an hour before time Van Buyten scored an equaliser, only for the best Bundesliga score, Luka Toni, of course, to seal the deal with two other strikes.
Coach Hitzfeld will field captain Kahn for DFB finals who missed the last match due to injury. This will be the sixth DFB finals for 38-year old keeper, out of which he lost only one after the penalties against Werder. Bayern rested most of the starters in the last match, except the best scorer Toni, who played during the whole 90 minutes, while the playmaker Ribery was introduced by the middle of the second half. Ze Roberto will also play on Saturday, after having missed the match against Frankfurt due to suspension so Bayern's strongest line-up will travel to the finals against Dortmund. Hitzfeld’s players will certainly start the match relaxed since only a week ago they taught millionaires a football lesson, having won them 5:0. Hamit Altintop and Wagner are injured and won't participate.
Betting Verdict
These rivals have so far met twice in Bundesliga; first match ended goalless, while the other saw five goals in one side net. In the last nine head-to-head duels Bavarians marked five wins while millionaires celebrated only twice. Dortmund have secured their place in UEFA Cup next season, by qualifying for the finals which is certainly a great success but it will take a miracle for the millionaires to end the season with a trophy.
