Two sides that expected much more this season are chasing the Ligue Cup trophy that will bring a place in Europe.
Trophy contention shadowed by relegation battle
Le Guen can’t seem to lift the shape of his players to a higher level and finally escape the relegation zone. Actually, they have been the relegation zone for a long time. They are only doing well in the cups this season, but Cup title won't be much of a consolation if they play in the second league next year. They are not far from it; we even think that besides Metz and Toulouse they are the most serious contenders for relegation.
It is hard to imagine such a thing but we should be realistic and say that this season, each club, even Metz had a positive period, but PSG can’t manage to move away from bottom.
Over the last few years a lot of money was spent on the players they can’t live up to expectations of the management. A clean-up is due in the summer and this title would heel their wounds, of course, if they survive.
They reached the finals without problems. Auxerre gave them a hard time in the semifinals but they won them comparatively easily although 3:2 score doesn’t speak in favour of that. They conceded the second goal in stoppage time.
They can’t count on Pauleta, Luyindula and Digard while Mendy should play.
Lens planned to fight for the Champions League
Before the start they announced Champions League contention but they soon realised that it was only wishful thinking. Since then they are close to relegation zone. They marked a positive series a month ago but soon after that they fell into crisis again. They obviously lack self-confidence and it is no wonder after such a pathetic season. They are only two points away from their rivals and relegation zone.
On their way to the finals Lens played only against the first-league teams. Lille, Monaco, Nancy fell and in the end Le Mans in the semifinals. After 4:4 in 90minutes they solved the match in extra time. Keita’s 118th minute strike helped them to the finals.
They don’t have many injury problems and they will certainly go out of their way to win the trophy. They will have to lift their play on a higher level since they have been pretty weak lately.
Betting Verdict
Although the match is played in Paris, we don’t think that PSG are favourites in this match. ON several occasions this season they showed that they are more dangerous away. Lens must start playing better and this is an ideal place to start. Odds for Lens to win are more than 3 which is too much as we see it. Make it a small stake since both sides are very weak lately and we shouldn’t rely too much on either of them.
