This week Champions League matches
|
Together with Schalke Fenerbahce are one of the most pleasant Champions League surprises. Turkish side managed to eliminate favoured Sevilla in the round of 16 and now they will play against Chelsea that haven’t suffered a single defeat in the Champions league this season.
Chelsea unbeaten in the Champions League
After beating Middlesbrough with half of the potential, Chelsea players turn to the Champions League quarterfinals. The draw paired them up with Fenerbahce. At first sight one can say that the Blues form Stamford Bridge have an easy task ahead of them, since Turkish side have for the first time in history reached the quarterfinals in the Champions League. Chelsea boss Grant is aware that precisely that is the biggest threat for his side, since the home side will play completely relaxed because coming this far is a success for them. Chelsea are favourites in theory but Inter, OSV, CSKA fell in Istanbul so London side tactics will definitely be the same as in Athens - closed play and guarding the net. As for the starting eleven for this match, Grant announced that Cech and Lampard will be doubtful till the last moment because they complained of injuries. There are no suspended players in the squad but if Essien earns a yellow card here, he will miss the match in London.
Fenerbahce believe they can make a sensation
A win over Sevilla and moving on to the Champions League quarterfinals meant a lot to Fenerbahce players. After this game Yellow Canaries marked four championship wins, last one being marked away against their great rivals Besiktas. Atmosphere in the club is great, everyone wishes to win Chelsea and keep the chance of eliminating English vice-champion and show to Europe that their being the Champions League knock-out stage is not a coincidence. The team will be weaker since injured Carlos won’t play, and Gokhan is suspended. Kezman, Deivid, Moreno and Sahin have two yellow cards booked each and they will have to take care not to miss the returning leg next week.
Betting Verdict
As we mentioned, Grant will demand of his players not to concede at any cost. The Blues have showed this season that they can defend pretty well and play for the score, and the best example is the game against Olympiakos. Fenerbahce will have to attack but if they open up too much one good Chelsea counterattack could destroy their dreams of semifinals. That is why we believe that the best bet here is under 2.5 goals.
