Villareal season 2008/2009

Great results

Villarreal are a team that gained many fans last year thanks to their attractive and very efficient play. Second place in the end of the season is the best place in the history of the club, which saw Yellow Submarine directly promoted to the Champions League, the competition where they even reached the semi-finals two years ago. Although they started the season as one of the many European contenders, the constant quality of the players and few aces in top form allowed Manuel Pellegrini to have many options and combinations. Nihat was the best but Santi Cazorla, Capdevila, Marcos Senna and Guillermo Franco were excellent as well.

The team kept the quality

Unlike some other teams with short first-league history, who also used to surprise with good results, a club like Villarreal has the financial power of the biggest clubs. The reason is Roig brothers, Juan and Fransisco’s ceramics industry who are main shareholders in the Yellow Submarine and basketball club Pames from Valencia. An extremely lucrative industry of making ceramics in Spain allowed these benefactors to create a big and powerful club in a tiny town with 20 000 residents. During the transfer window that in Spain lasts till the official start of the championship, that is to say till 31st of August midnight, five players left El Madrigal, among which are Jon Dal Tomasson, Josemi, Barbosa, Martin Caceres, Arzo and Mavuba, while excellent Edmilson arrived from Barcelona, striker Llorente from Valladolid, Altidore, Robert Flores from River Plate, and excellent Argentinean midfielder Ariel Ibagaza who will make the midfield even more dangerous. On the management's wish list are also Lucho Gonzalez from Porto and Burdiso from Inter, so we will see if their transfers will be realised till the end of the transfer window.

Great expectations

New season will welcome Villarreal with really great expectations. As the title of the famous Dickens’ novel, this season will be a really big challenge for this team. Excellent players in all of the positions in the club are a guarantee that they quality will at least be the same as last season. Many think it to be enough for the yellow to seriously claim a place in title race as well as the second round of the Champions League. The quality is indisputable and experienced and calm coach Pellegrini who has been in charge of the submarine for several years now, is a guarantee of a good atmosphere among the players.

Our tip: Position from 3th to 5th place
