Valencia season 2008/2009

Season to forget

Last season was one of the worst in the last 30 years for Los Ches. Such a low status and surviving in the last minute is a situation which even the oldest Valencia fans haven't seen. Copa Del Rey won reserved them a place in Europe, this time in the lower rank, but still in Europe. UEFA Cup is a financial boost for the economic crisis which followed the failure of former coach Quiqe Flores' sports project, mostly due to the disagreement with the management.

One of the calmest transfer windows

The most important thing for the club is that almost all of the players have stayed in the team. Many Valencia players caught the eye of the biggest Spanish and European clubs, expecting that they will be eager to change the environment allured by lucrative offers and because of the economic problems in Valencia, who in the meantime found the solution. Contrary to expectations and the current trend where players have absolutely no feelings for the club they play in, Valencia's biggest stars decided to stay in the club. David Villa was already seen as new centre half in Real Madrid while Silva was mentioned as new Barcelona, Atletico, Real Juventus, Arsenal member. Both of them decided to stay and contribute to Valencia's come back on the position where they rightfully belong in both Spanish and European football. Only two players arrived at Mestalla during the transfer window, but two very quality back-ups. These are, Gavilano back from loan to Getafe, and Pablo Hernandez arrived from the same club. In the last season Mora, Canizares, Caneira and Sunny left the club, and certainly the most important was departure of stubborn Dutch coach Ronaldo Koeman who apparently hasn't learnt a thing about the importance of the crowd in Spain and who was at war with the players and the fans form the very start thus creating an unbearable situation in the club. Ne coach Unai Emery is quite the opposite of Koeman; an open, simple person who is first of all, a fan of logical and simple principles in the play. With the manpower at his disposal in Valencia he will undoubtedly reach high goals.

In

(Internacional Porto Alegre), Del Horno (Athletic Bilbao – loan return), Curro Torres (Murcia – loan return) Pablo Hernandez (Getafe – exercised buy-back option)

Out

Arizmendi (Zaragoza), Caneira (Sporting Lisbon) Sunny (Osasuna - loan), Canizares, Mora (contracts expired)

A season of high expectations

Valencia will this year be a very serious candidate for the title. The quality is indisputable and the motivation will probably be higher than before. They will try to make up for the embarrassment and weak play from last year. When a team has players like Villa, Silva, Vicente, Mata, Joaquin, Miguel, Albelda, Baraja, Morientes, Zigic, Albiol and the rest, the expectations must be high. This season with the new coach Valencia have all prerequisites for the quest for the title. Excellent play and a 3:2 win in Super cup opening game against Real Madrid proves all we talked about.
