Torino season 2008/2009

The clash between ambitions and reality

All Serie A seasons in Torino's recent history look the same, cheap movies with a predictable end. It is not a too harsh rate; remember last summer when Di Michele and Recoba as well as several other players arrived to Piemonte, they announced fighting for Europe and on presenting the new coach Novellino president Cairo said that the new shiny era begins. Several months later, Torino were on the wrong side of the standings, Novellino blamed everyone and the back-ups failed completely. The club reacted by returning De Biasi on the bench... He was working in difficult conditions in financially troubled Levante so he embraced the offer to be in charge of the Bulls, somehow he managed to save them but the season has left a bitter taste for Torino. The soap opera continued during the summer; Torino seemed so uninterested in the transfer that their best player Rosina threatened to leave if they don't reinforce the team. They again have the same problem as last year, they lack a classic forward. Once again the target was Rolando Bianchi who tricked them this winter and went to Lazio, but the club didn't have enough money to satisfy his appetites. As a sort of compensation experienced Nicola Amoruso arrived from Reggina whose goals kept Calabresi in the league but he needs time to adapt. Being that he is 34 years old time is not an ally of his. The basic problem is that president Cairo promises a lot and spurs on the expectations and than ends it with a bad transfer campaign.

Many players left the Bulls over the summer

Big clean up was done, De Biasi simply got the permission to do anything he likes, he gave up Recoba, Motta, Dellafiore, Lazetic, Bjelanovic, Oguro, Lanna... Captain Comotto searched for a new challenge in his career by moving to Fiorentina. As for the famous names, Amoruso, Pratali and Austrian player Saumel arrived. So, the team didn't suffer any major changes, they are still looking for back-ups but it is hard to believe that Torino are able to bring the players with enough quality to improve the team. The financial situation is not a clear-cut one; coach De Biasi demands from the club to say the amount on his disposal in the new season. Since there obviously isn't any money for some bigger transfers, Torino are hoping to get some players on-loan like Paloschi or Boriello from Milan. But there is not much hope for that.

In

Pratali (Empoli), Saumel(Sturm), Amoruso (Reggina)

Out

Motta, Oguro, Bjelanovic, Lazetic, Comotto, Dellafiore, Recoba, Lanna

Our tip

Torino are not so optimistic as last season, and if they repeat the similar play as last season Serie B won't be an impossible case scenario. This team is limited by many factors; too much depends on Rosina's individual quality who will sooner or later get tired of the play in a club without ambitions. You get the impression that the Bulls are aware of their weaknesses which is a certain progress but they will hardly manage to avoid the relegation battle. They have a certain quality; there is Di Michele who managed to find his old form during the summer. Also signing Diana in the winter transfer window was a good move. Torino will probably try to make it through the fall, and search for a solution to their problems in winter. One thing is certain, we shouldn't expect major achievements from this club, and if the things go wrong the first one to fall will be De Biasi although he is already warning that it is impossible to fulfil president Cairo's demands with the current squad.

Our tip: Samp to finish in bottom half
