Sevilla season 2008/2009

Without Ramos

After two fantastic seasons where they won two UEFA Cups, one Copa del Rey and one Super Cup, and made it to the Champions League last season was tragic for Sevilla, although fifth place is not a weak result. The season started wrong and didn't end much better. The clash between Dani Alves and the management because of his eagerness to leave Sevilla and move to Chelsea, a tragic misfortune in the last season's opening round game when Antonio Puerta died, Juande Ramos' resignation a month and a half into the season, created a lot of tension in the team. Still, in many games Sevilla reminded of the invincible squad from the first two seasons, but failures in crucial games saw the team out of the Champions League

Revolution at Pizjuan

Although everything pointed to the fact that coach Manuel Jimenez who replaced Juande Ramos will be sacked in the end of the season, he is still on the head of the team where he once played as a starter. When thins settled down a bit, Sevilla management realised that popular Manolo gave his best and that in some games the team didn't play good because of the inexplicable attitude of certain players towards their duties. That is why the doors were wide open for certain players to leave the club during the summer transfer window. This first of all, applies to the main disturber Dani Alves who moved to Barcelona. Aside form him excellent Keita left, while Danish Poulsen decided to continue his career in Juventus. Boulharoz moved to Chelsea thus ending the list of players who left this town on Guadalquivir. On the other hand, even eight new players came to Seville from all over the world, from Spain, European leagues, Latin America... German Andreas Hinkel, Fernando Navarro from Mallorca, excellent Abdoulay Konko, excellent Frenchman Sebastien Squillaci, then Lautaro Acosta from Argentinean Lanus, the heart of excellent Racing last year Aldo Duscher and finally Tome de Mul and Argentinean Cristian Romaric, are a proof that Sevilla didn't spare money in their plan to join championship title contention and possibly UEFA Cup title.

In

Fernando Navarro (Real Mallorca); Lautaro Acosta (Lanus); Abdoulay Konko (Genoa); Romaric (Le Mans); Aldo Duscher (Racing Santander)

Out

Daniel Alves (Barcleona); Seydou Keita (Barcelona); Christian Poulsen (Juventus); Josep Lluis Marti (Mallorca); Duda (Malaga, loan)

A team for great feats

Sevilla lost three excellent players but managed to keep fantastic players like Luisa Fabiano, Kanoute, Capelo, Navas, Kherzakov, Renato, Dragutinovic and the rest, and with such good back-ups they definitely have a higher potential than last season, The club did their job excellently so it is up to the coach and the players to find the formula for success. There is no doubt that Sevilla will insist on high tempo and it is realistic to expect that alongside Real, Barcelona, Villarreal, Valencia and Atletico, they will be main contenders for the title.
