Osasuna season 2008/2009

Without Ramos

Contrary to all expectations, Osasuna struggled to survive last year till the very end of the season. Such result is not the realistic picture of team's quality, for half of the league was in the relegation battle which made last season very strange and unusual. There were a lot of problems in Pamplona club with injuries of key players for example, Delport and Pandiani, so if we take all of this onto consideration, it is no wonder this team survived only in the last round. Coach Ziganda threw in many young players, Jaroslav Plasil, Kiko Sola, Vela and Fonto, which will probably pay off in the upcoming season.

Without many changes

Since the moment when they secured their place in the league, Osasuna knew that it will take a lot of investments during the summer to compose the new squad. Coach Ziganda got extra credit in his trust bank and he believes in the quality of the players at his disposal. Not so famous Krisztian Vadocz and well-known Santi Ezguerro from Barcelona arrived and another newcomer is also Sunny who came from Valencia. Hugo Viana who moved to Valencia, Igotz Garde, Izquierdo, Javi Garcia who went back to Real Madrid and Astudillo who went back to Alaves, all left Osasuna. The club from Navara was always known to handle their businesses very rationally. Economic stability in Pamplona contributed to the situation that Osasuna doesn't owe anything to their players, which is usually the case in some Spanish clubs, due to the crisis in the architecture sector, from where the biggest investments come.

In

Inaki Astiz (Legia Warsaw), Roberto (Sporting Gijon), Sunny (Valencia – on loan), Masoud Shojaei (Al Sharjah), Nicolas Medina (SD Eíbar), Krisztián Vadocz (NEC Nijmegen), Roversio (Pacos de Ferreira), Santiago Ezquerro (FC Barcelona)

Out

Javi García (Real Madrid), Juantxo Elia (Real Murcia), Enrique Corrales (Real Mallorca), Carlos Vela (Arsenal), Hugo Viana (Valencia), Ion Erice (SD Huesca), Martin Astudillo (Alavés)

Midtable is reality

Osasuna have a decent quality this season. Besides Jaroslav Plasil, Vela, Fonto and Sola, they have experienced Walter Pandiani, Delporte, Punal, Flano and Portillo. With the same coach, the same style and the team that is more or less of the same quality as last season, Osasuna could find their way to the midtable, somewhere between 9th and 15th place. Any higher result would be a surprise but not impossible, considering that each year many Spanish teams surpass the expectations. Osasuna have the material to be one of them, as it happened to Racing last year. We shouldn’t forget that three years ago they were Cup finalists, and two seasons ago Javier Aguirre led them to UEFA Cup. This is certainly the team able to surprise and they will give a hard time to many Primera members.
