Malaga season 2008/2009

Quick come back

Faithful to their tradition Malaga quickly came back to the first league. It wasn't easy to hold on the title race last season in competition with Sporting and Real Sociedad, strong rivals in the top 3 contention. All three teams are old Primera teams and there was room only for two since Numancia have escaped ahead already by the beginning of the second part of the championship making it almost impossible for any of the three teams to catch up. Blue-white demonstrated very good football last season and if they repeat similar play, the club from La Rosaleda won't have problems this season.

Seven ex and four new players

Many players left the team among which some of the starters. Portuguese Paulo Jorge went back to Benfica, Erice reinforced Osasuma, Ivan Rosado will be helping Racing and Valcarce, Hidalgo, Jesule and Sandro left the club without knowing their final destination. A significant acquisition for Malaga is Ivan Cuadrado who arrived from Murcia where in spite of a weak season he was one of the best starters. Also very significant signings are Nacho from Getafe and experienced Fernando from Betis and striker Pere Marti from Elche is expected to be one of the revelations of the season. Malaga are fifth Andalusian club in Primera and at this moment this region has most clubs in the first league. Except for the last season in the elite, Malaga were always a tough nut to crack and a stable first-league team. Institutional support of the big city, sixth biggest in Spain, is very important so no one expects unpleasant surprises this season.

In

Miguel Angel (Real Betis), Lolo (Sevilla), Manolo (Levante), Luque (Granada 74), Nacho (Getafe), Fernando (Real Betis), Iban Cuadrado (Murcia), Pere Marti (Elche), Welington (Grasshopper Zurich)

Out

Carpintero (Cordoba), Antonio Hidalgo (Zaragoza), Gerardo Carrera (Las Palmas), Erice (Osasuna), Paulo Jorge (Benfica)

The squad is uncertain

Malaga squad is one of the uncertainties in this new season. There are quality players in the team but this doesn't have to mean that they will secure their place without problems. Taught by Zaragoza's experience that last year got relegated from Primera, it is best not to jump to conclusions. It is essentially important to adjust to the first league as soon as possible. Objectively, Malaga should fight to survive in the first season but they also might surprise. We will know more after opening games.
