Genoa season 2008/2009

Genoa accomplished their goals last season

A 12-years long exile was finally over in 2007 when rossoblu came back to the elite. Genoa are traditionally an important club in the Apennines but a combination of bad luck, a lot of turmoil and a disastrous transfer policy have put them behind Sampdoria's back over the last two decades. The only aim in the last season, after the return to Serie A was to avoid relegation battle, adjust new demands, promote some new players and start the process of stabilization in the elite. All of this was done fantastically, coach Gasperini showed that he can win with an offensive approach.. Sometimes Grifone seemed archaic with their 4-3-3 formation, but it gave results against the clubs from the bottom. Gasperini had some troubles at first, since it took time for certain players to get used his system but it paid off. This excellent coach used to take care of Juventus football school that is to date considered the strongest in Italy. It is no wonder his former trainees like Criscito, Palladino, Paro, Konko are rushing to Marassi. The club has very stable financial situation and there is no doubt that, after the golden midtable, their appetites will grow. Genoa seem capable of joining the UEFA Cup contention.

New director Foschi did an excellent job

First rossoblu pick in the transfer window was certainly Raffaele Palladino… Gasperini managed to bring him to Marassi hoping, unlike Ranieri, to fins him the right place in the squad and get the best out of him. Juventus gave up this lad too easily and he is predicted to have a brilliant future and he didn't get the real chance last season although he made it to the national squad. Also the club realised defense as a potentially weakest spot; they changed almost whole defensive line, the last back up is Ferrari from Roma. Potenza and Mesto arrived too, two players with huge potential who wish to get back in the form that will get them on Lippi's list. We should mention that Genoa are left without two excellent players Konko and best scorer Boriello, however they now have more players to chose from which will be an advantage over the last season. The club certainly want to make a step toward Europe; they are hoping that young player lead by experienced coach will mature quickly and that some older players will find their old form. For example, Lucho Figueroa, the man who in Villarreal got to the Argentinean national squad could remind of old days... If that happens, no one will even think about Boriello.

In

Modesto (Reggina), Palladino (Juventus), Potenza (Fiorentina), Di Genarro (Bologna), Biava(Palermo), Gasbarroni(Parma), Bochetti(Frosinone), Ferrari (Roma), Mesto (Udinese), Olivera (Juventus)

Out

Da Rosa, Boriello, Konko, Bovo, Lucarelli, Santos, Fabiano, Leon, Danilo

Our tip

Based on what the transfer window campaign we can see that Gasperini and Foschi insisted on defensive players, for it was the weakest part o’ the team. The club let some of the unnecessary players go and the transfer window efficiency was excellent. Alongside Fiorentina, Genoa seems to be the only ones to succeed in solving their problems during the summer. This shows that the club has a clear estimate of what they lacked so they did a good transfer purchase, so although they lost two of their bets players, the ones who arrived at Marassi are more than decent replacements. Now Gasperini has a lot of quality players at disposal…Perhaps the team will need time to get used to his system for there are a lot of new players now but as the time goes by Grifone will play better and better. This team has a great potential, it would be no wonder if they joined the top 7 contention; anyway they should end up in the top half of the standings without problems. Genoa were usually a safe pick against weaker teams and we expect their quality to show this season too. When they are up against the team that have trouble defending, Genoa demonstrate their offensive quality.

Our tip: Genoa to finish in top half
