Bristol City season 2008/2009

Last season surprise

The biggest surprise of the last Championship season was certainly Bristol’s squad. As a newly promoted, they had successful campaign, and with excellent performance during the whole season they managed to be at the top for the whole year. Without star players and big names, they have been real threat to all the teams in the league. They had great chance for direct promotion, but it looks like they had been afraid of the success in front of them, failing to finish the season in the style. In the play-off they won against Crystal Palace twice, but then lost against Hull City in big final, losing a chance for promotion. Still, they have nothing to be ashamed off.

City is not better this year, but won’t be worse either

In transfer window they lost their best midfielder Australian international Nick Carle who joined Crystal Palace. Also, their best goal scorers Darren Byfield and Enoch Showunmi left the club to Doncaster and Leeds respectively. Still, great striker Dele Adebola is still here and they invested 2.25 million pounds in Crewe forward Nicky Maynard. He was the best League One goal scorer last year with 35 league goals and could be real deal this year. Also, Egypt international Emad Meteb arrived from Ipswich. Key players in defense are still there, like probably the best right back in the league Bradley Orr. Bristol City fans have certainly something to hope for after successful season last year. With excellent manager Gary Johnson at the bench they will be on of the main candidates for promotion.

In

Nicky Maynard (Crewe), Gavin Williams (Ipswich Town), Emad Meteb (Al Ahly)

Out

Nick Carle (Crystal Palace), Enoch Showunmi (Leeds United), Darren Byfield (Doncaster Rovers), Alex Russell (Cheltenham Town)

Big potential

After disappointment in the play-off final, The Robins could use that experience for excellent campaign this year. They have more then solid squad, and even more important, they have one more year of experience at this level. Similar to last year, Bristol City is underrated at bookies and we will try to use that for sure. We think that they are serious contenders for play-off at least.

Our tip: Bristol City to be at top 6
