Bordeaux season 2008/2009

Bordeaux finished just four points behind Lyon

Bordeaux had a very good last season as they pushed the leaders Lyon all the way and in the end were just four points behind them. They played some good football and after few years when Lyon had no real competitor for the title, Bordeaux made the champions work hard and fight until the last round. The team was behind the leaders all season, but they never gave up, which just shows their character. This season their fans hope that the team can make another step in the right direction and finally win the championship The arrival of Laurent Blanc as a coach had inspired the team, and they have been moving forward ever since. With the arrival of some younger stars they hope to finally beat Lyon to the title, and give their fans something to cheer.

Gouffran and Gourcuff to show their talent

Considering great last season, the club decided to sign no more than three players, but two of those are real treat. Yoan Gouffran, young forward who arrived from Caen, is pushing on the door of the national team after playing 22 games for U 21 side, and is one of the great prospects in France. Yoann Gourcuff arrived on loan from Milan, where he was not able to show his potential, and will be very motivated to assert himself in Bordeaux. The third player is Diego Placente, experienced left back, who came from San Lorenzo. The club decided to give up on some of the older players, mainly Johan Micoud and David Jemmali, and to create space for younger players to shine. Alejandro Alonso moved to Monaco. Midfield area will once again be the strongest part of the team, with the likes of Diarra, Fernando, Gourcuff and Wendel. We will see a lot of goals from midfield players, as Wendel scored 12 last season, and Gourcuff can score goals himself.

Bordeaux will fight for the title

After very good last season, Laurent Blanc will try to lead his team to the league success this year. Everybody at the club believes they are ready for serious title challenge, but it won't be easy, as Lyon, Marseille and PSG also hope to win Ligue 1. Bordeaux managed to beat Lyon on penalties in the warm up for the season, Champions Trophy, and this will give them some confidence. Blanc kept most of the team except for veterans Micoud and Jemmali, but with a help from two outstanding players that joined the club Gouffran and Gourcuff, the team will be much stronger this season. The team has a very experienced keeper in captain Ulrich Rame, and defense is very good too. Midfield is the strongest part, and the fans will expect the most from that part of the team. The attack is also very strong with Cavenaghi, Chamakh and Belion fighting for the starting place. Big problem this season can be the fact that Bordeaux will play in the Champions League, and because of that the players may not be able to produce the best performances in league campaign. Therefore, I don't think they'll be able to win the league title, but will be very close to the top.

Our tip: Bordeaux to finish in top 3
