Barnsley season 2008/2009

Close to FA Cup final and relegation to League One

Crazy season for Barnsley is behind us. They had excellent run in the FA Cup, beating Liverpool and Chelsea on their way to the semis where they lost to Cardiff. At the same time, they have been close to relegation to League One. After coming back to Championship 2 years ago, they have always been in relegation problems and this time they certainly hope it won’t be like that. But, bookies don’t. With almost all big bookies, odds for their relegation are among lower ones and it would not be a surprise to see them back to League One at the end of the year.

Lot of new faces

Simon Davey signed a couple of fresh faces in order to strengthen the team. He is perfectly aware that his team is one of the relegation candidates. His main goal was to keep Brian Howard with the team. The influential midfield player had lot of offers during the summer from Premier league teams, but decided to stay with his teammates at the end. Also, return to fitness of Muller, the first option goalkeeper is the good news for the fans as well as signing of ex-Manchester United kid Luke Steele from WBA who will cover this position. Problems in the striker department Davey is hoping to solve by signing Iain Hume, last season Leicester top striker with 11 goals. Should we remind you that Leicester have been relegated to League One and for 1.2 million pounds we think that Dovey could do better.

In

Luke Steele (West Brom), Iain Hume (Leicester), Roberto Colace (Newell’s Old Boys), Mounir El Haimour (NE Xamar), Darren Moore (Derby), Maceo Rigters (Blackburn), Gary Teale

Out

Paul Reid (Colchester)

Relegation - probably

Problem with Barnsley is that they can not play in good form for a long run. FA Cup proved that they have solid quality, but in the games against quality opposition every week they fail to produce. We doubt this time will be any better. Signings are solid, but nothing more. Key one, Hume, is not someone who will bring some extra quality and we would not be surprise to see them rocked bottom.

Our tip: Barnlsley to be relegated
